TARRANT HINTON IN THE FIFTIES
I lived in the village from 1957 until 1961.My dad was the village policeman and we lived in the police house at the Blandford end of the village, the first house as you come in.At that time there was a pub, shop, farms and dairies. The dairy was on the Blandford road as you leave the village, just up from and on the same side as the police house.I took a can up every morning for a pint of squirt, straight from the cow.The dairymen were called Wally Gasson and Henry Lilywhite. The village shop was run by Mrs.Cross.Opposite the pub, there was a slot machine, where you put in two shillings and out came a packet of six eggs. I remember families of the names Gorge and Miller. The local farmer was called Neville Poole and his wife taught me at Pimperne school. The Hoopers were another farming family;we knew them as Austin and Neddy.I do remember the name Claude Killington, but no more than that.
At that time there were long watercress beds that ran down to the stream on the left hand side and mushrooms grew everywhere. There was a cinema at Blandford camp that villagers used to visit and I recall the larksong on Collingwood Corner.
